ASUU STRIKE: WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR ANOTHER MEETING PROPOSED BY FG– ASUU

Nigerian University Students who are eagerly waiting for ASUU to call-off its 23 days old strike would still have to wait.

Latest report reaching dailycampuslink news desk has it that, The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), disclosed to newsmen that they are still waiting for another meeting intended by the Federal Government, to discuss the way forward concerning the ongoing lecturers’ strike.

This was herald to news Agency of Nigeria by the ASUU National President, Dr Nasir Fagge,on Tuesday in Lagos.

It would be recalled that, ASUU had on July 1, embarked on indefinite Strike for failure of the Federal Government to honoured implement the 2009 agreement and Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two parties..

The lecturers are protesting the non-implementation of an aspect of the agreement they entered into with the federal government since 2009.

According to Fagge, the Minister of Education and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), after the last meeting they held with ASUU, promised to convene another one.

He said that they were waiting to hear from the government officials.

His words “We shall continue to wait for them until they are ready to putin place a lasting solution to the current issue, so that our children and the lecturers alike can go back to school.”

Fagge said that plans by other labour unions in the academic community to also embark on strike over non-implementation of agreements by the federal government would further jeopardise the sector.

“This is an indication that government is not doing what is right and until government starts looking at agreement as a product of collective bargaining, we shall keep having problems.”

Dailycampuslink call on ASUU to collaborate with university administrations in respective universities to identify ways of curbing this menace which has brought global opprobrium on the Nigerian academy.
